The fells and dales have a multitude of different habitats, from unique relict floral communities, to grouse moor of heather, ponds, rivers, marshes, deciduous and coniferous woodland.

There are also many invertebrate species including bees, moths and butterflies, dragonflies, true flies, beetles and native crayfish.
